We're moving!

It's not what you think, just had to get your attention!

We are moving to a new blog address, finally, to match the name of my blog, and to be more appropriate since we have added a couple of boys to the mix since I originally set up our blog.

Here is a link to the new address: www.lifeindunnville.blogspot.com. All future posts will be there, and check out the latest post...already published!

Addie is 5!

Addie Kate, I can't believe you're already 5...you are growing up way too fast!  Please don't ever stop dressing up like a princess and giving me spontaneous hugs & kisses.  Your personality is so beautiful.  You are so sensitive towards others and very compassionate when others are hurting.  Your enthusiasm for life is contagious.  Your competitive nature and wanting to be like your sister is helping you learn faster; I can't believe you are already writing the alphabet and sounding out small words! You want to help people every chance you can.  How blessed I am to have you for a daughter!

We had Addie's party at the Jumping Party...pretty self-explanatory; a huge room with lots of those big blow-up jumpy thingies.

She also got her ears pierced!  Here she is in the chair, nervously waiting.

"That hurt more than I thought it would."  She was so brave!

Still hurts a few minutes later....

...but a sucker made it all better.  :)

The B is 3!

Happy 3rd Birthday, Brady Bear!  You amaze me every day with your puzzle skills.  Your big, brown eyes melt my heart. I look forward to our daily snuggles that I hope never end.  Hearing you sing all day fills my heart with joy...I can already tell you have your daddy's singing genes. I love you, sweet boy!

These are a few of my favorite things...

By now I'm sure you know how much I love taking pictures of my kids sleeping...here are a few recent ones.

I love that Dawson helps me unload the dishwasher.

Brady still LOVES puzzles!

The girls had a camp out in their room a few nights ago...they invited me to come roast marshmallows with them over their campfire! (The fire is the pile of sticks and cut-up construction paper on the floor.)

Standing beside their "tents"

This is one of my favorite videos ever.  Dawson is in this adorable stage where he thinks he's talking, and no one can understand him...but pretending like you do keeps the conversation going.

first day of 1st grade

Annalee was really excited for school this year! That isn't surprising, but what made today a little different than her first day of Kindergarten was that she didn't seem nervous at all.  She was more confident getting ready this morning, and when she got to school, she walked right in, said "hi" to her teacher and friends, and sat right down and started working on the worksheet at her desk.  Such a good student!

3-for-1 post

So much has happened recently, I'll combine it all into this post.  I'll start on a light note...Annalee got her hair cut!  Like, REALLY cut!  Like, I was too afraid she'd end up bald if I tried to do it because she wanted it chin-length.  Here are the before & afters:

I love it...I think it's so cute. And much more manageable. And she loves it too. She'd been asking to do it all summer, but I made her wait a while just to make sure she really wanted to do it.

The next post would've been about the girls learning to ride their bikes without training wheels!  They've never really been avid riders, but Annalee decided last Friday that that was the day.  And of course, our little competitor Addie couldn't let big sis one-up her, so she decided she had to do it too.  Within an hour, they were both zooming up and down the street and in-and-out of driveways.  And by the end of the weekend, they could both get themselves started, stop correctly, and make turns in streets and driveways.  I'm so proud of them!  Now they want to ride all the time!

Now for the 3rd story.  I've written a short and long version, so pick the one you want. :)

Short version: Annalee fell off her bike last night in the street, busted her chin, and had to get 7 stitches. She's doing great today; her only complaint is that her jaw is very sore and it's difficult to eat. Scroll to the bottom for pictures and the good we see in this experience.

Long version: Since we went through this with Annalee the first time in May of 2008, I've prayed it wouldn't happen again...but God had other things in mind.  Lee was at a meeting after dinner (of course...don't these things always happen when your husband isn't around?)  and I was out front with the kids and the Voskamps (our best friends since college who just so happen to also live across the street), riding bikes, of course.  The girls had been begging all day to ride.  I ALMOST said no, that it was too hot, let's just watch a movie instead.  But we didn't.  We'd been outside for about an hour when I went to move our sprinkler and heard the crash...I'd heard that scream before, a little over 3 years prior, and instantly knew something on a much higher level than the usual bad had just occurred.  I looked up and saw Megan sprinting towards Annalee who was crumpled in a heap with her bike in the street 2 houses down.  I took off running towards them, but as is the case in these instances, it felt more like a mile.  Megan had gotten there first and scooped up Annalee and handed her off to me and said, 'She's gonna need stitches, don't you think?" I knew instantly she was right. The cut looked exactly like her eyebrow had looked.  So I ran inside and grabbed a towel for her to hold on her gushing chin, and I was headed to the car, Megan asked if I wanted her to come along, to which I instantly replied, "yes!"  That's just the kind of friends she and Travis are to us.  This isn't the first time they've let their own lives get flipped upside-down to help us. I could go on about all the times they've rescued us, but I'll continue.  On the way to the ER, Megan got a hold of Lee and told him what happened.  Luckily he was able to leave the meeting he was in and meet us about 30 minutes later while we were waiting.  When we got there, Annalee was whimpering a little, and wasn't complaining about the pain but more how scared she was.  She still remembers when this happened 3 years ago.  Bless her heart, she was trying to be tough and brave, but she knew exactly what was coming.  We got to a room fairly quickly and saw the doctor, where things seemed to start getting worse...she spit out a few fragments of a tooth that had gotten chipped.  Her jaw was hurting so much that she could barely open it, so her ordered an x-ray to see if it was broken.  She fell asleep once we got back to the room (thank you Lortab!), and she didn't wake up when they put the numbing cream on.  The doctor woke her up about 45 minutes later to start the stitches and inform us that the x-rays were clear (PRAISE GOD!), and she was calmer and very happy to realize her chin was already numb.  About 30 minutes and 7 stitches later, we were being discharged.  She did great, never said a word.  As we were walking out to head home, she said, "Now I don't have to be afraid of the hospital, because I've been there and it wasn't too bad!"  So sweet.  Megan had taken Lee's car home and put our kids in bed over at their house (oh, and bathed them, found and put their pj's on, and picked up our living room!), so when we got home (around 10:30), I gave Annalee a bath (she was covered in blood and scrapes and bike tire marks) and Lee brought our kids home & put them to bed.

What I've been thinking about since last night: I can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that despite another scary and painful experience that will be marked by yet another scar on Annalee's beautiful face, I can again praise the LORD that it wasn't worse that it was.  It was just her chin, not a brain injury.  Her jaw wasn't broken. A car was not involved. Her tooth is okay.  Our friends were there for us in Lee's temporary absence so I could focus on Annalee. God used our last experience to remind me that everything was going to be okay.  I was able to stay more calm because we'd done this before.  I have another way to show my daughter (and her siblings) how faithful God is, that He is the Great Physician and Healer, and that she/they can trust Him when they're scared or hurting.

Lee made an interesting, and frightening, observation when we got home.  She learned to walk, stitches. Learned to ride a bike, stitches. Learn to drive...?  Well, yet another chance to trust the God of the universe, I suppose, and to continue to pray for His protection over our little family.

Below you can see the mildest pictures I took.  And here is a link to the bloody ones, if you like that sort of thing.  Also in that album are the pictures from when she busted her eyebrow 3 years ago and got 12 stitches.

The nurse taped a cotton ball soaked in the numbing medicine to her chin while she was sleeping.

Aloha!

Lee and I had an amazing experience in Hawaii.  It is absolutely the most beautiful place I've ever been. But I must admit, we decided fairly early on in the trip that this would be the last time we go on a long trip without the kids.  Several times a day we wished the kids could experience whatever activity we were currently doing.  So I guess that means we'll just HAVE to go back in a few years with them.  :)

I KNOW there is an excessive number of photos here...I tried my best to narrow down to just my favorites...got it down to about 60 out of the 500 I took.

Our first night we got to meet up with Lee's cousin Allison, who just happened to be visiting some old friends from when she lived there.

The view from our gazebo at our B&B...We ate breakfast here almost every morning. Just a few steps down a little hill and we were on our basically private beach...we rarely saw anyone else!

the outdoor shower with an ocean view...probably my favorite feature of our B&B!

We saw several surfers at our beach...apparently we were just 100 yards down from the Banzai Pipeline, where all the famous surfing championships are held in the winter when the waves are 30 feet and make the huge barrels.

Saw 5-6 of these while we were there...no wonder it's called the rainbow state.

On our first full day, Allison took us to meet some friends at their house and learn how to paddle board, pretty self-explanatory. By the way, a lot of scenes from Lost were filmed at this beach, Kawela Bay.

attempting to stand on the paddle board....

fail.
Finally got it!  That's Lee snorkeling behind me.

Snorkeling adventures: we saw soooo many of these guys!!  So glad I got an underwater camera!  We snorkeled about 5-6 times, and it was like being inside a tropical aquarium.  These pictures don't do it justice!  (I could say that about all our photos!)

SCUBA!

Hiking Diamond Head...this was very impressive!  It was a pretty easy hike up the wall of the crater to a gorgeous view. Evidence of the war was obvious in the form of pill boxes...one of which you have to crawl out of to get to the top.
the pillbox you have to crawl out of at the top...it was easy to imagine yourself hunkered down in here with your machine gun ready to shoot down the Japanese fighter planes.

Pearl Harbor...way cooler than I thought it would be.  I'm not usually interested in war history, but this was truly amazing.

Lee and I in front of the USS Missouri.

Looking at the actual spot on the deck of the Missouri where the Instruments of Surrender were signed by General MacArthur, the Japanese representatives, and other allied representatives.  There were dozens of other witnesses, mostly military and naval officers.

The sight-seeing....

Spitting cave...apparently when the waves are rough, the cave (where the water looks like it's flowing into the rocks in the middle of 1st pic) that spits water...we didn't see that, but how gorgeous is this water and the lava rock formations??

More cool sights...

Had to post this...one thing we did NOT know is that chickens are EVERYWHERE! Sort of like squirrels here in Midland.

I took this picture for the view of the mountaintop...they are always covered in a rain cloud.

A tsunami punched a hole in this rock- wow!

Driving in Hawaii is an experience in and of itself.

We got to go to a rain forest near our B&B which had a botanical garden along the mile-long path to a waterfall. It misted/sprinkled on us the whole way!

We managed to venture down to Waikiki one morning just to say we did...apparently all we were missing out on was the homeless of Honolulu and the other 1.2 million people who were on vacation. Pretty, but not our cup of tea.

too crowded!

Back on the road to our side of the island where it's calm and unpopulated. I loved these trees...they lined most roads.

miles of pineapple fields

Not sure what kind it is, but this was my favorite tree because I loved the flowers.

Sunsets!
